講義概要/Course description
In Marshall McLuhan’s best known book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (1964), he wrote “The medium is the message.” His idea was that not only is the content of a medium like television or film important, but also the characteristics of the medium itself are important as well. For example, accessing something on your smartphone is usually a personal act, very different than watching a TV program with friends, or seeing a film in a theatre full of strangers. In addition, paintings, photographs, radio, film, and the Internet content are all very different.
In this introductory course, we will explore the mass media, the relay of information from individuals and groups to large segments of the population, the history of media, its influences, and the convergence of different media today. Lectures will trace the history of mass communication from man’s earliest images in caves to the invention of writing, Gutenberg’s book printing press, painting, photography, magazine and book publishing, and censorship.  There will be weekly class readings, Powerpoints, group discussions, Questionnaires,  and two projects/reports.

NOTE: Due to conducting courses online, students should be sure to check Course Power for assignments and also for my contact email if you have questions.  There will be powerpoints and handouts for students to access on Course Power.  Homework largely consists of downloading/accessing PDFs (Handouts) and Powerpoints (ppts) and reading/listening to them (some contain audio) and taking notes.  In addition students will complete weekly Questionnaires on Course Power (Homework Assignments) and do two projects (Communication Pyramid Project and Photo Project). It is essential that students complete all tasks by the deadline.  Late assignments will not receive full points.  Materials on Course Power (apart from Class 0 and the Test) will generally be available for 1 week.  Make sure you access the materials within that time frame.
